Distributing Articles

I know one of the best ways to build quality one-way links is to write and distibute content. What are some accepted ways to distribute this content? I have had little luck with the one web publishing site I have used, although they show articles downlowded many times, I have never had a search come out positive on them actually being used, and besides that, I'm lumped in with some of the worst junk possible.
