A general contractor is any individual or company that is capable of taking charge of the full process of a construction project. General contractors work in commercial and residential construction, overseeing projects from single family homes to skyscrapers in densely-populated urban areas.

In order for individuals to be employed as general contractors, either individually or as part of a larger construction company, no education is technically required. However, the vast majority of companies seeking a general contractor for a project prefer to work with someone that has a combination of education and experience. An associate or bachelor’s degree in construction is a common educational requirement, though other degrees are considered acceptable as well.
